I am starting to hate HBS3

Post by lexvo » Sat Oct 24, 2020 5:39 pm

Thus far I have used Backup Station for my backups and it has always worked fine. A few years ago I tried HBS. But I couldn't get it to work after putting a lot of time in it, maybe also because of bugs. Anyway, now I know that new firmware won't support Backup Station, I tried HBS3 again.

I setup a backup task (to an external USB drive), started it manually and everything worked fine. The second time however I got warnings "Failed to copy all attributes". I looked in the log files under /etc/qsync/logs/detail. I found 2 log files with 8000 and 50000 lines respectively.

1) Am I supposed to search in those large files for errors? I searched for things like "error" and "warning" but found nothing. Or does it mean that there are issues with 8000 or 50000 files? The second time only 10 files were updated according to HSB3. This number is correct I think, but then I would expect max 10 entries in the log file?

2) My external drive is HFS+ formatted, could that be a problem? But why is this working great with Backup Station?

Anyway, I am already spending too much time (again) on what should be a very simpel backup. I wish Backup Station would be supported longer, as HBS3 and I don't match :)
Sorry for the rant.

Never used HBS3 before switching to QTS 4.5.x; had massive problems with more than daily recurring BackupJobs suddenly.
Had to setup four separate BJs in HBS3 for replacing an existing BJs in BackupStation that ran every 6 hours formerly.
The imported BJs from BS just stopped without warning/notice after 24h.
HBS3 seems to have a huge problem with multiple BJ's per day as of now.
HBS3 seems to have many problems more as of now (use forum search).
:(

@1) yes you are; these logfiles have a defined size; newer stuff gets added, older stuff gets deleted... they are usually sorted by time/date.
@2) even Apple isn't using HFS+ anymore; they switched to APFS three yeas ago.

Does QTS 4.5.x with HBS3 still support HFS+ as target drives?
Sadly that' not documented by QNAP....

Yes, I forgot to mention that. HBS3 versie 13.0.0930. I guess it is the latest version as I installed it yesterday.

I couldn't find anything about HBS3 and HFS+ either. I know HFS+ is becoming old, I was surprised myself that the external drive was formatted this way. I am going to try a drive with a different format.

Well, it looks like that HFS+ was the problem. I formatted my external drive EXT4 and tried again. Now the second backup ran fine. I'm going to watch my scheduled backup (each night 2AM) but I think that will be OK also.

Good ole tried and true EXT4 to the rescue! It's just works and I'd always use it if that option is available.
