iscsi on QNAP

Post by keysteal » Thu Jun 18, 2020 3:21 pm

Hi guys,

I'm trying to understand why on my QNAP TS-451A, the actual speed of iScsi uses only 1 Gb / s. I have configured my Esxi to use Round Robin
Multipath in the iScsi software, I supposed to see a speed increase, more than 1 Gb / s, but the maximum speed even if you use 1 or 2 Qnap Nic Card,
it is always 120 or 130 MB / s. I have RAID 5 using 3 WD40EFRX. Any suggestions?

p.s: I'm thinking to configure NFS partition, and using LACP on both Qnap and Esxi, as ESXI, for iScsi, does not suggest LACP for speed aggregation.

speed increase will only work for multiple clients

if you want more speed get a 5GbE USB NIC or a NAS with 10GbE network options

what you mean with "multiple clients"?

1PC and 1PC, a single PC will not see increase in transmission speed

ehm, I have an ESXI with a 4 - 1 Gb / s NIC card and a QNAP with a 2 - 1 Gb / s NIC card. iScsi in multipath, with Round Robin, should work with more than 1 Gb / s Nic.
Probably, as someone wrote to me on Facebook, it is more a bottleneck of the WD40EFRX, than a network problem, as that model has a maximum speed of 150 MB / s.
And on a Raid 5 array you lose more speed.

Have you tested speed increase of multiple nics before.. or are you just assuming that it 'should work' ?

if you would loose speed the more drives you have, then people with 24 bay NAS units would really have a bad time .. eh ?

I assume it should work, yes. But after many tests, I suppose it has many factors that reduce speed: iscsi protocol,
HDD speed (WD40EFRX is a slow 5400rpm with transfer rate of 150 MB / s), array used.

Nope. It depends on the type of NAS, of HDD and of NIC connections (I guess people who have 24 bay use a fiber channel not a normal GB nic).
