SS-893 - Share Folder Access Denied

Post by longj0n » Wed Sep 23, 2009 1:40 am

Hi, I am posting this as a hint for others - this has been bothering me for days, until just now.

So I set up a share folder - Documents, in the Web GUI, assign RW permissions to my group and happily copy all my docs from my XP box to this new share.
Then I set up another share folder - Applications, same permissions. I copy some stuff in there too.

Then, a day or two later, I go to create a folder in Documents - "Access Denied" on my XP box.
Try same thing on my Vista laptop - same problem.
BUT, if I go down one level in the directory tree in that share folder, I can happily create and delete stuff.

The Applications folder is fine, no "Access Denied" messages there.

Re-assign all permission and re-create users and groups - no effect.
Unmap and re-map all network drives - no effect. In fact I am using the unmapped network shares showing up in Win Explorer half the time anyway.

Finally in frustration I SSH on to the NAS using admin id and pw.
I locate my Share Folders in: /share/MD0_DATA
ls -l shows:

Code: Select all

[/share/MD0_DATA] # ls -l
drwxrwxrwx    3 admin    administ     4096 Sep 22 18:10 Applications/
drwxr-xr-x   46 admin    administ     4096 Sep  6 19:46 Documents/

... Documents share folder has somehow ended up with 755 permissions!!! After I already happily copied a load of stuff in there!

so I simply issued:

Code: Select all

[/share/MD0_DATA] # chmod 777 Documents/
[/share/MD0_DATA] # ls -l
drwxrwxrwx    3 admin    administ     4096 Sep 22 18:10 Applications/
drwxrwxrwx   46 admin    administ     4096 Sep  6 19:46 Documents/

et voila! No more "Access Denied" messages.

Now I don't know what anyone else / QNAP thinks but this would appear to me to be a fairly serious BUG!

But apart from that I am very happy with the 839, although let's see if any other folders end up with different permissions... :D

Getting a similar issue with the 209. I checked, and USBDisk1 doesn't show up in the shares list, though, so I can't change the permissions.
