PoE?

Post by Kvarnen » Mon Sep 17, 2007 6:41 pm

Is it possible to build the next version of TS with PoE support so you don't have to have an external power source?

That is, is it doesn't consume too much power...

<EDITED> For those of you who have asked me before: PoE means Power-over-Ethernet. It means that the unit draws power over the ethernet cable. In order to use it, you need to have power in the "other end" of the cable, either by using a switch/router with PoE support or by using a PoE injector... </EDITED>

Hi Kvarnen,

QNAP one-bay NAS, e.g. TS-109 consumes about 14.4W under normal operation. However, according to the resources of poweroverethernet.com
"The power sourcing equipment (PSE) will be capable of outputting 15.4W (350mA @ 44V). But the IEEE 802.3af specification states that with 20 Ohms series resistance, the maximum input power to the powered devices (PD) = 12.95W (350mA @ 37V). If the DC/DC converter is 80% efficient then the available output power = 10.36W. This is something to be aware of this when working out the actual power, under worse case conditions. The IEEE have set-up a new task force to progress POE further with a higher power standard IEEE 802.3at. This is still in progress and the new standard is not expected to be ratified in the near future."

Obviously, the current PoE technology cannot fulfill the power consumption of our NAS products. Therefore we'd not consider this feature at this stage. Thanks for your suggestion though.

Ok, point taken.
Thanks for a quick and good answer, though.
