Which for system/VM volume: M.2 SATA or SSDs?

Post by kbyrd » Tue Jun 30, 2020 10:37 am

I'm going to end up with two M.2s and two 2.5" SSDs, I want to use one for the QTS,VMs, & containers and the other for QTier added to my 3.5" array. Since the M.2s are not NVMe, the speed difference between the two isn't as big. Which set should I use for which purpose? Why?

Compare the speed of your M.2 + the slot it's going to be on VS. the speed of your SSD.

Theoretically, an AHCI M.2 would be as fast as a SATA III SSD, so the only difference would be the BUS speed, for the M.2, the data is directly connected to the CPU through the bus and the need for memory to call the hard disk is eliminated, so that the PCI-E transfer speed is close to the maximum transmission speed.
Although negligible, your M.2 will be faster so I would put QTS on there.
Other than that, no other difference to my knowledge.
