Drag & drop to QNAP using Finder ?

Post by steerage250 » Wed Oct 21, 2020 4:55 pm

This hopefully is an extremely simple question from a Mac newbie that can be answered with one word....

- can Mac users use the standard Mac Finder program to drag & drop files to & from a QNAP NAS from the MAC hard drive ? (eg same as copying to/from a USB hard drive?)

I am contemplating recommending a QNAP NAS for my (Mac-using) daughter and I don't want her to get any nasty surprises. (I have been using QNAP NASs in a Windows environment for many years)

uh....

if you want drag drop, you can login to qts via a browser, go to filestation, i believe that supports a drag an drop feature?

personally on windows, i browse to my share on the network, then i cut/copy paste from my windows pc to my share folder.

Qfinder purpose is for checking qnap nas availability on your network to make sure it's accessible on the network. You can also use qfinder to mount the share as a hard drive letter on your pc if you want. I instead just create a shortcut to my share, then enter credentials.

Thanks Moogle, but I was wanting to know whether she can use the Mac's Finder (the Mac equivalent of Windows Explorer - not QFinder) to drag and drop (or copy & paste) files between the Mac hard drive and the QNAP.

The short answer is yes. You can mount the NAS from Finder > Go > Connect to server > smb://Qnas_NAS. The dialog box will give you the option of login as guest or registered user (with password), then allow you to select the directories to mount. Once mounted, you can drag & drop like a Mac.

New user and member here.

i was reading this post and followed this link.

https://blog.qnap.com/mac-101-basics-ho ... -your-mac/

I have no problem loading the files on my Mac. But I have found I can only do that if the user name is Admin. I want to assign several users and have them be able to do this as well.

Can someone point me to a tutorial on how these "shares" can be loaded by a regular user (non Admin).

to my understanding for non admin users, you have 2 options

1. setup a non admin account for the user to have their own credentials (username and password)
2. allow guest access. no credentials required. only requirement is that they have access to the lan where the qnap is on

it all comes down to permission rights. other than that, the process should be more or less the same ?

Thanks Moogle Stiltzkin. I have set up the person and user name and password but when we try and log on it says I need an admin logon. Will check again to make sure the privileges are correct and try again.

yeah when you create a user account, you also need to check permission rights. the read/write status for the shares. then you modify it accordingly.

then that person needs to enter their credentials into mac.

for windows 10 we got credential manager, then add an entry our nas that includes the nas lan ip, username and password. I imagine mac should be something similar?

Once done, you should be able to view the NAS share on your network.

Moogle Stiltzkin.

Thats the way I set it up. I gave the person R/W privileges on the share, but I need to check that again and verify that it is really set up that way. What I don't remember is if I used the Finder option on the Mac to enter the address and then set up the share (using the "Go" "connect to server" options).

Its all a learning experience. Thanks for your attention and advice.
