Container station - Virtualisation station recommended disk setup

Post by GeorgeNow » Mon Sep 28, 2020 12:53 am

I've installed a TS-453D for home use this week. The learning curve from my old TS-459 PRO II of nine years old is pretty steep and I'm afraid to make rookie mistakes.

I want to setup Container Station but I'm not sure what is the best way.

So far, I created two storagepools: one for traditional NAS and one for Container Station, Virtualization station and other apps because I want to keep the snapshot space allocation separated.

I want to use snapshots to restore quickly when I do stupid things in VM's and docker. As far as I understand it, it is pretty useless to snapshot anything in the Container subdirectory/share when all data is in a separated Docker share, but it makes a lot of sense to snapshot VM's.

Is it smart to make thin provisioned separate volumes for containers, VM's and the Docker share: so three volumes? I would do this to quickly revert a snaphot. I was thinking about thin provisioning to avoid useless assigned capacity.
