Using WD red drive# from a WD mycloud?

Post by Yalcrab » Tue Jul 16, 2019 8:20 am

If I pull my WD red 4tb drives (2) from my WD mycloud mirror can I use them in a new QNAP 2 bay enclosure?
Do I need to format them?
Would existing data images and documents be readable on a QNAP or would I have to redownload them all ?

the term for buying external storage and simply removing the hdd to reuse in other devices is called shucking. here is an example thread about that

Would the 10TB hard drive inside a WD My Book work with a QNAP TR-004?

I'm using three of these inside of a TR-004 and they're running fine! All of my HDDs in my QNAPs are shucked drives.

Makes me wonder if the QNAP didn't support the 3.3v lead? If that's the case the fix is simply a piece of tape. You can find more information with a sub search it googling "wd white shuck tape 3.3v".

you can use the qnap forum search to find out more.

yes you can get a cheap price by shucking, but personally i find it too random to get the right drive.

This is an example of one of the types of issues you will encounter using a shucked hdd. i never shucked myself so not too sure on the kind of reliability to expect (i'm aware that the warranty is shorter)

Moogie, thanks for that, it’s a new term to me. It’s my drives I’m just fed up with the mycloud and it’s awful software.

shucking voids warranty..
But in my case, WD gave me only 1year warranty for the Mycloud product (to include the WD RED drives), so shucking after the 1 year, warranty is irrelevant.
