File Station move - merge or replace?

Post by ckahn » Fri May 01, 2015 2:29 am

Will the File Station move operation merge or replace?

For example, I move this folder called "2015" with this file structure:

Code: Select all

2015
+ 01
++ photo1.jpg

Into the folder called "Pictures" that already has a "2015" folder with three files in it:

Code: Select all

Pictures
+ 2015
++ 01
+++ photo1.jpg
+++ photo2.jpg
+++ photo3.jpg

Will the result be a replace, where the folder contents of the source overwrite those of the destination (like OS 10.4)

Code: Select all

Pictures
+ 2015
++ 01
+++ photo1.jpg

Or will the result be a merge, whereby all the files are kept (like Windows):

Code: Select all

Pictures
+ 2015
++ 01
+++ photo1.jpg
+++ photo2.jpg
+++ photo3.jpg

And is there an easier way of asking this question?

It will overwrite any pre-existing files with the same filename. (Just like any other operating system, including Windows).

On my first day on a Mac-based job in 2005 I lost an entire folder of video and audio files assuming that OS X merged folders just like Windows did. Luckily the files were captured from tape and I could re-capture the files.

I just did a quick test and it appears it works on file level. It seems to merge folders when I choose overwrite.
Luckily this is the safest.
I needed this because this crappy program somehow only partially complete my tasks several times. Now I can just retry until everything is done.
