TS-431KX 10G Speed Problems

Post by athurdent » Fri Aug 28, 2020 11:39 pm

Just got a new Qnap TS-431KX and ran some iperf3 speedtests against my Supermicro server, which does 10G just fine to other 10G hosts. The NAS is connected to a UniFi 10G switch using a Ubiquiti DAC-2 cable. Also tried Ubiquiti 10G SFP+ modules with a short fiber cable, same result. Jumbo frames are off.
Anyone else having the same NAS and can run a short test?

Transferring to the NAS is slow (Running with -R on the NAS):

Code: Select all

# iperf3 -c192.168.*.100 -R

Connecting to host 192.168.*.100, port 5201
Reverse mode, remote host 192.168.*.100 is sending
[ 5] local 192.168.*.11 port 46632 connected to 192.168.*.100 port 5201
[ ID] Interval Transfer Bitrate
[ 5] 0.00-1.00 sec 500 MBytes 4.20 Gbits/sec
[ 5] 1.00-2.00 sec 488 MBytes 4.09 Gbits/sec

[ 5] 5.00-6.00 sec 457 MBytes 3.84 Gbits/sec
[ 5] 6.00-7.00 sec 449 MBytes 3.77 Gbits/sec
[ 5] 7.00-8.00 sec 487 MBytes 4.08 Gbits/sec
[ 5] 8.00-9.00 sec 514 MBytes 4.31 Gbits/sec
[ 5] 9.00-10.00 sec 512 MBytes 4.29 Gbits/sec

[ ID] Interval Transfer Bitrate Retr

[ 5] 0.00-10.00 sec 4.73 GBytes 4.06 Gbits/sec receiver
Doing this also increases error and overrun counters:

Code: Select all

# ifconfig eth0
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr *
          inet addr:192.168.*.11 Bcast:192.168.*.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
          inet6 addr: fe80::*/64 Scope:Link

          RX bytes:62407251771 (58.1 GiB) TX bytes:36982580136 (34.4 GiB)
The other direction is absolutely fine:

Code: Select all

# iperf3 -c192.168.*.100

Connecting to host 192.168.*.100, port 5201

What kind of drives are installed that you expect anything close to 10G speeds out of a 4 bay device ?

I am used to running an iperf3 server on my QNAP NAS to test network speed, and I am trying to verify if the NAS is broken, badly designed or if my DAC/fiber cables are not compatible.
Would be great if anyone could run the same test, ideally using a DAC/transciever from the QNAP HCL.
Thanks!

Also tried with Jumbo Frames enabled now, does not make a difference.

Next problem, if I pull the DAC, the SFP+ port locks up hard and never comes up again.
Anybody using a DAC/transceiver from the compatibility list having the same problem, or is it just my Ubiquiti DAC that is incompatible?
