Tuner with hardware transcoding vs transcoding in NAS

Post by bandb » Fri Sep 18, 2020 10:21 pm

I am considering moving my Plex server from an iMac to a NAS. I use Plex mostly for recording and playing back OTA TV. I play back using a PLEX app on my smart TV. My tuner has built-in hardware transcoding. Does this affect the need for transcoding by the NAS ?

You are probably far better off asking Plex related questions on the plex forums, there are is a lot more activity on those forums.

The need for transcoding is determined by the player used, not the server. If the player can not play the file as encoded, then the server will perform transcoding.

What I’m trying to determine is does having hardware transcoding in the tuner decrease the need for transcoding capability in the NAS ?

tuner hardware transcoding would be used for saving the files on disk(e.g. mpeg2 fta stream to x264 or x265)..not for playback by clients
