A friend of mine is also using a VPN on its NAS system. Is it worth doing? What's the use of using a VPN on NAS system?

UPDATE

It seems the Synology Surveillance Station does not support standard RSTP authentication of shared streams. It also uses a session id which will not be static.

Returned to Amazon for refund. Picked up a dedicated NVR from the manufacturer of my IP cameras which does support RSTP authentication.

Unlike the QNAP SS, Synology actually publishes their API. Also confirmed via Wireshark during my testing.

https://global.download.synology.com/do ... I_v2.0.pdf

The Synology SS uses session IDs which the majority of third party IP camera apps only support basic or digest authentication to connect to RTSP streams or images.

It's such a piece of **, that we use it as a temporary file server where all the ** goes.

Why do they do that?

QNAP is better. I thank myself for making a choice of shifting from Synology to Qnap.

Well, everything was going good and I was considering myself a champ at Qnap untill a few sharing and transferring problems occurred. Right now I only have media streaming going strong there

LOL Ikr.

Sharing format is changing whenever I put something in my USB to transfer it to NAP. Don't know what's wrong. I have tried it with every external USB that I have. All are on NTFS format. None is working.
