Small update from my side:

I found out, that the new version (v2.1.170410) of Hybrid Backup Sync is the reason why my disks dont reach standby mode.
After stopping Hybrid Backup Sync standby is working again.

Anyone else has the same problem like me?

Hi - yes, I have exactly the same issue, disks won't spin-down with fluctuating kernel_processes CPU seemingly preventing the standby mode from kicking-in.

I'm running 4.3.3.0154 (20170413) firmware however after a long period of disabling/enabling apps it came down to Hybrid Backup Sync v2.1.170410.

Hopefully this will be resolved in the next round of bug fixes.

Hello,
Just switching to last version of QTS 4.3. Before I had QTS 4.2.
Once again, my disk drives don't go to hibernate. I can see disk access every 7 seconds on the disk on which my apps are installed.
Using a TS251C.
Anybody else encountered this issue ?
Thanks!

Hello,
I'm aware that's an old thread, but I would like to know if there was found a solution because I have a similar problem. Bought 2 weeks ago a TS-451A and configured two single drives, no RAID. First I installed a lot of apps but soon I noticed that the two drives nearly never stop their activities. To find out what is the reason I deactivated / deinstalled most of them. But the activity didn't stop.
With Google I found this https://wiki.qnap.com/wiki/Find_out_which_process_prevents_the_hard_drives_from_spindown
and made a log with the blkdevMonitor_20151225.sh script. (attached). In the log I view a lot of activities but as I am not a specialist I have no idea what's really going on.
Hopefully looking forward for everyone who can help me.
Some more information to my configuration:
Memory 2 GB
1 HD 1 TB, 1 HD 2 TB configured as two single Volumens, Firmware-Version, 4.3.4.0427 Build 20171223

Regards and thanks in advance,
Klaus

Consensus seems to be that in QTS 4.x there are a lot of background tasks that keep the disks grinding away. Shutting down some unneeded apps might help a bit, but there really isn't any way to totally stop the constant disk activity.

Do you have HGST drives? I found out the hard way that the actuators on those ** are *really* noisy. I'll be moving the NAS to an equipment closet after I hardwire the house with Cat5e. If it is still too noisy I'll probably switch to WD Red drives.

First drive is a Western Digital WD10EAVS-22D7B0 1TB (GREEN) which is only a provisional solution.
Second drive is a Western Digital Red SATA III 2TB (WD20EFRX).
Both drives plus fan aren't really noisy, but it's making me nervous, seeing this heavy disk activity with, in my modest opinion, nothing worth to do on disks. No sync, nothing connected and about 10% of disk space occupied. I'm up to move to another NAS company.
It seems, that this permanent HD activity is a Qnap characteristic. I don't need dozens of background tasks. Only want to use it for daily backups and rare viewing or playing some multimedia files.
Thanks for your comments.
Klaus

I haven't actually heard it, but my son says his Synology NAS also has constant disk activity. May just be the nature of the beast(s).

As others have pointed out, the duty cycle on these drives should handle the activity, and RAID will protect the data from everything but an asteroid strike. (See threads about CrashPlan for asteroid insurance.) Many of the complaints come from people who have to live or sleep in proximity to their NAS/washing machine.

FYI my usage profile is pretty much the same as yours. I'm using Acronis for local backup of PC's to the NAS, CrashPlan to backup PC's and NAS to the cloud.

I spent a long time with QNAP support on this issue with my ts-251. I have two drives in RAID1. They were constantly accessing the disk preventing them from spinning down. Eventually they fixed it on a firmware update about 6 months ago and my disks have spun down ever since. Someone logged into my NAS and poked around on multiple occasions and ran that blkdevMonitor and reviewed the output. I don't have the NAS in the same room but if QNAP say it is supposed to work then it should :)

Occasionally there have been QTS-bugs preventing spin-down yes but many services and apps also prevent spin-down, some always and some only in specific configurations. These services and apps are not always controlled by Qnap but by third-party developers with their own agenda. This problem gets worse every day as the NASes have developed very far from when the spin-down feature was introduced and when the NAS was only a basic file server more than 10 years ago.

Disks are designed to spin, they don't fail from doing exactly that.

Please note that no experienced users are taking part in this cat-and-mouse game of achieving spin-down. In fact many experienced users consider the spin ups, that's the result of "success" with the spin downs, to do more harm than good.

That said, WD Green is desktop computer disk which is strongly non-recommended for NAS usage. Not for longetivity reasons but because they're known to cause issues in this application. NAS disks or higher are very much recommended and a good place to start when looking for disks is the Qnap compatibility list.
RAID have never ever been a replacement for backups. Without backups on a different system (preferably placed at another site), you will eventually lose data!

A non-RAID configuration (including RAID 0, which isn't really RAID) with a backup on a separate media protects your data far better than any RAID-volume without backup.

All data storage consists of both the primary storage and the backups. It's your money and your data, spend the storage budget wisely or pay with your data!

Sorry for the delay. I did some more tests. Did deactivate almost everything which is to deactivate and what could eventually work in a regular time lap. Checked disk activity another time and now am absolutely sure that anything isn't working as it should.
Yes your'e right. Disks are designed to spin but I don't think they're there to be in continuous activity about 24 hours a day without only seconds of interruption. Perhaps this thread is not exactly the right place for my problem because I'm not worry in the first place about my disks not spinning down, but see this as a sign that they are continuously active - not spinning, that's normal, but with continuous head movements to notice by the continuous clic and clac and seen by the attached protocol. In the log you also see, that there were written many times the same sectors. I'm not an expert and perhaps my limited knowledge lets mi in a wrong place, but do not believe that this is OK.
As I told earlier the green disc is only a temporally solution and should be soon substituted. I will today backup my data, remove the green one, reset the NAS with only the red one to factory settings and have a look if things work better.

rmmeli how do you get support? Did you sent the feed back form which is in Qnap site or is there another way? Thanks.

Now you can use the Helpdesk app on your NAS to submit a request

My experience with QNAP Technical "Support" is that they wear you down with slow, incorrect or canned responses (or no responses until you sufficiently harass them) until you give up.

Hi all,

I have an issue with a system process "dd" constantly waking up my drives.
What does that system process do, what can I do avoid it waking up my disks constantly?

Log:
[ 8234.265984] dd(3932): dirtied inode 3336 (kmsg) on md9
[ 8234.266000] dd(3932): dirtied inode 3336 (kmsg) on md9

Guys, would anyone share your experiences with HDD sleep/spindown either on 4.3.4.0435 build 20171230 or 4.3.4.0427 build 20171223? Tried 4.3.4 in beta and HDDs were still spinning, so I'm asking before upgrading to 4.3.4 again.

Thank you for sharing your experience.
