Ok, I know how to do this stuff as I do it for a living. Guess I will go buy another brand since nobody can give input.

I will get another one for you. That is what has me confused. In my above output (at the top of this thread), my Qnap went into standby then setcfg set it off. I keep trying to see why it's running and it's gone. Sounds like something is being called by the OS or some required operational service.

Ok, is there a way to call /bin/ps | grep setcfg in a continuous manner and log it? I tried to use the up arrow enter as quick as I could but could not get the setcfg in the split second it was called. Looks like it executes in less than a tenth of a second.

That is going to be tough one. The trick might be to rename the setcfg program to setcfg.bin and then write a script named setcfg that captures the parameters being passed to setcfg and log that info, plus what time it all happened. The last thing would then be to pass the parameters to the real setcfg.

Just a thought.

This discussion about UPS is not to the point imo, and still there is no answer to the initial question regarding spinning down the drives due to the md1_raid1 activity.
Does anybody know where that activity originates from and how to silence it, as it seems to disallow spinning down of drives (which is an option QNAP clearly offers but seems to be not achievable) as indicated now by various independent reports on this forum.

You'll need to find it yourself. Every QNAP NAS is able to run a different set of packages - which can affect spin-down. Later QTS versions also run more QNAP software.

@dolbyman's first post in this topic links to QNAP's wiki regarding spin-down: https://wiki.qnap.com/wiki/Hard_drives_spindown_issues

no worries, I always forget that QNAP did manage to have an article on spindown too ;)

users always think that enabling a spindown option means its just on or off. but thats not the case. Same with SCCM Power plans and schedules. there are so many factors before it actually works.
