Add me to the list of disgruntled users. All apps and services disabled except Microsoft Sharing, Apple Sharing, and Download Station. Confirmed Download Station is not actually downloading anything. The disk never spins down at all. Using blkdevMonitor, I got to hear the HDD spin down for the first time ever. Output of blkdevMonitor:

My pick would be Microsoft Sharing. Test again with all services off and start enabling the 3 mentioned services one by one and run the blkdevMonitor after you enable a service. (start with Download station,Apple Sharing and last Microsoft Sharing) Now you might find the service who's responsible for waking up your drives and start investigating the source of the problem.

Okay, there's a new 3.1.2 beta out now - but it seems that QNAP has NOT done anything to fix or solve the standby problem at all!

A big argument for buying QNAP NAS was the ability of power saving. Now in reality, TS-439U drives never spin down and enter standby mode with nearly ALL services disabled and no packages installed.
Perhaps disabling the entire network ports would help...
So why is it so hard to detect what's the standby problem is?

The blkdevMonitor isn't really helpful at all, because it's completely empty, see my post above.

According to the blkdevMonitor your disks are in standby......Do you here your disks go in standby when you start the blkdevMonitor? With my TS-439 (not the U version) I hear my disks go into standby mode when I run the blkdevMonitor (clicking sound from my samsungs disks). My disk lights are always on (only the status light goes off, I don't know how this is on a TS-439U) when my disks are into standby.

Actually I can't tell if they are/go in standby, because it's deployed in a very noisy room.
But ALL lights (including the status light) are always on, and all I can do is rely on the lights... :?

Mmm....the status light should go off when your disks go into standby. It's strange that running the blkdevMonitor doesn't show anything. Does the status light go off when you start blkdevMonitor?

I tried disabling almost all the services. And after that, even unplugged the lan cable. But the 239pro behavior is the same: 10 min active (OK) + 4 MIN STANDBY ONLY.

Did you disable All services or Almost all services?? Do you use iSCSI?

No iSCSI. No DDNS.

I began disabling Microsoft services, uPNP, Multimedia, download, FTP, MySQL, Web server, etc. At the end, I think that only Web file manager was alive. Then, I unplugged the RJ45, just to find a router or external cause, but got the same result.

Have no idea, but my NAS is still empty of data. I got my machine three months ago with 2.1.7. As it is intended for a personal use, I tested it and learned about for a pair of weeks. Ext. 3. and HDD standby working fine at last, when I realized to disable DDNS (not in manual). Just before charging of all my data, 3.1.0 was born. And 3.1.1 . And 3.1.2 beta later. Now Ext. 4, glad me. But never succeeded to spin down the disks for more than 4 minutes.

It must be a process or service from the NAS, picking each four minutes...

Maybe there is something weird in the crontab? (/etc/config/crontab) that keeps your disks spinning or maybe it's the Seagate drives who need a firmware update....if not...I'm out of ideas..

Hi all!

At last, standby is working flawlessly! :D

After trying a lot of ideas, BlkdevMonitor.sh and so on for some weeks, HDD spin down is OK!

Mi solution: Reset option, new Raid 1 mirroring (format disks) and new configuration of NAS.

Note: My configuration is, exactly, the same than before. But I did it as I have gotten a new NAS. I didn't trust in restore the previous backup configuration, since I suspect something didn't work after upgrading from 2.1.7 to 3.1.0, and later to 3.1.1 and 3.1.2.

Don't forget to save the data before!

Nice to see the green state button light off, again...

Hope it helps!

I am about to give up on this wake-up from standby thing, but I'll give it one more shot. I have turned off EVERYTHING (smb, afp, ssods, you name it), and the only thing running is the SSH - so that I can run blkdevMonitor to check what is going on. The disk (TS-119) now, after installing 3.1.1 it seems, wakes up every hour at 13 minutes past the hour. I have no idea why.

Can anyone make any sense of the printout below?

Re: [Discussion] Not entering HDD standby mode?

Post by khenderick » Sun Nov 15, 2009 9:20 pm

I think most of the activity is caused by the scripts itself. Try modifying the contents of the script so it logs in the /tmp directory.

---------------------------

I have replaced most of the config and logfiles to flash storage (attached USBdisk) so the disks can go in standby. However, only secrets.tdb is causing trouble.

smbd(25345): dirtied inode 27626 (secrets.tdb) on md13

/proc/mdstat shows me: md13 : active raid1 sda4[0] sdb4[1]

So the touched file should be on those disks. I know sda4 is mounted as /mnt/ext so I replaced /mnt/ext/usr/local/samba/private/secrets.tdb with a symlink to /etc/config/secrets.tdb. /etc/config is a symlink to /mnt/HDA_ROOT/.config so the secrets.tdb is located at /mnt/HDA_ROOT/.config/secrets.tdb. That file is a symlink to /share/USBDisk1/samba/config/secrets.tdb so I guess the file in on flash storage. But why is it causing a disk spinup that reports to be on md13?
